Definition of Stakeholders
Stakeholders defined: a person, group or organization with an interest in a project.
Have you defined who the stakeholders are in your community. It is important to know how your idea, program or organzation will impact your community and who you need on your team that will receive value from your efforts. Checkout the Value of S.A.F.E. TEAM stakeholders report.
Group Discussion “Safe School Environment”
Many are looking to us to answer questions about school safety and involving families as volunteers. One of the largest groups of individuals asking are members of the National PTA. Since we are members of the PTA and active on their PTA Great Ideas Bank discussion board, we have launched a group to effectively answer questions.
Join us on the Safe School Environment group page.
On the Air with Birth 2 Work Radio

In April 2010, I was conducting trainings for IL PTA Convention outside Chicago and I met Elaine Scott with Birth 2 Work. After learning of each others efforts in regards to communities and schools we knew there was an immediate connection between our efforts. Since that time, we have not only confirmed our theory, but are setting the stage to implement our programs in target markets.
A couple of weeks ago, I was invited to join Elaine and Rick Stephens on their radio show and discuss not only our efforts with Schools And Families Engaged (S.A.F.E. TEAM on Campus), but also the challenges facing school communities and families at large.
If you want to get a sense of my other passion, make time to listen online or download the mp3 to the program “We’ve all been shot: Are you ready for what is next? “

“It Can Happen Here” (video on school safety preparation)
Through the Office of Justice Programs' National Institute of Justice: It Can Happen Here Video
“It Can Happen Here” is a documentary video designed to inform and compel audiences of school safety stakeholders to prepare for man-made and natural emergencies. “It Can Happen Here” makes use of unprecedented access to those first responders, administrators, teachers, students and parents involved in some of the most horrific acts of school violence in U.S. history including the Columbine, Platte Canyon and Amish school house shootings. The lessons learned from these incidents are a primary focus of this video.
Watch the video online or order a DVD to be sent to your school for review by your safety planning team.
Why start a S.A.F.E. TEAM in your school? Let the facts get in the way of your decision.

The Search Institute has been providing high quality research on the needs of youth for 50 years. One of the most landmark studies involved the creation of 40 Developmental Assets. Schools And Families Engaged™ has documented how our approach to Family Engagement supports the 40 Developmental Assets in building individuals, families & communities.
We gotta make the grades – all A’s so every student can graduate and go beyond.
Attendance = Students have to be at school to learn. (Parents this is your responsibility to follow through or ask for assistance.)
Attachment= If a student feels connected to the school and has a desire to attend because they are connected in some way, they will keep coming back. (Schools this is a significant piece to understand. Involve your community in this vision.)
Achievement = Everyone Graduates. There is no other goal. Any lower goal is failure. We are here to provide a solid education to ALL children/students. (This is a community buy-in issue.)
Attainment = Students have the skills and knowledge necessary to pursue secondary education, prepped for the workforce, etc. (The student is now challenged to be a great and productive citizen in our society. )

NEW Partner for Parental Internet Safety
Schools And Families Engaged (S.A.F.E. TEAM on Campus) is continually seeking resources to allow families to be more successful in their role of raising their children. Technology and internet access has brought many challenges to the parenting role.
Our staff has used K-9 Web Protect in our own homes for several years. Blue Coat/K-9 Web Protect has partnered with Schools And Families Engaged to further our missions of providing schools and families a safe environment.

Grants for your School/District
As with all federal grant competitions, they had many more applicants than they could fund. But that doesn’t mean they can’t help those who didn’t win (or even apply for) grants. The feds have an excellent technical assistance center with innumerable free resources that districts can use to improve their preparedness at http://remstacenter.org/. I urge you to avail yourself of the materials available there.
