Character Plus Conference during All-Star Week

This is an oldie we found in our files that hadn't been posted to the blog.  All-Star Week is a fun atmosphere in a city and a great time to hold a conference.

Interview by AL PIRC with S.A.F.E. TEAM

As you develop an organization nationally, you will also develop key relationships within states around the country.  One of those relationships for us is with AL PIRC and AL PTA.  At the AL PTA convention, our Chief Inspirational Officer, Scott Huse, sat down for an interview with the AL PTA's Program Chair/ AL PIRC Director, Sherri Wilson.  We had posted the podcast link back in May, but here's the video shot during the interview.  Take a few minutes to watch both Part 1 and 2.

“It Can Happen Here” (video on school safety preparation)

Through the Office of Justice Programs' National Institute of Justice:  It Can Happen Here Video

“It Can Happen Here” is a documentary video designed to inform and compel audiences of school safety stakeholders to prepare for man-made and natural emergencies.  “It Can Happen Here” makes use of unprecedented access to those first responders, administrators, teachers, students and parents involved in some of the most horrific acts of school violence in U.S. history including the Columbine, Platte Canyon and Amish school house shootings.  The lessons learned from these incidents are a primary focus of this video.

Watch the video online or order a DVD to be sent to your school for review by your safety planning team.

We gotta make the grades – all A’s so every student can graduate and go beyond.

Attendance =  Students have to be at school to learn.  (Parents this is your responsibility to follow through or ask for assistance.)

Attachment=  If a student feels connected to the school and has a desire to attend because they are connected in some way, they will keep coming back.   (Schools this is a significant piece to understand.  Involve your community in this vision.)

Achievement = Everyone Graduates.  There is no other goal.  Any lower goal is failure.  We are here to provide a solid education to ALL children/students.   (This is a community buy-in issue.)

Attainment = Students have the skills and knowledge necessary to pursue secondary education, prepped for the workforce, etc.    (The student is now challenged to be a great and productive citizen in our society. )

What’s the value of Volunteering?

People + Their Time = Valuable Effort

Recently we were asked by a new school starting a S.A.F.E. TEAM program about what numbers were out there to prove the value.  That caused us to run a Google search and we found two excellent sources.

1.  Corporation for National & Community Service has a published document called Volunteering in America from 2007.  Great stats including regional/state data.  link

2.  To learn specifically about the dollar value of volunteerism go to  Independent Sector's site.  link
